Nævi choroïdien kystique: une étude d'imagerie multimodale de quatre cas

Choroidal nevus is the most frequent benign intraocular tumor consisting in a solid mass formed by melanocytic cells. The existence of cystic cavitation is uncommon and has not been previously described.

This was a retrospective review of consecutive cases with cavitary choroidal nevi. All patients underwent complete ophthalmological evaluation, ocular ultrasound exam and swept-source optical coherence tomography (ss-OCT).

Four patients with unilateral cavitary choroidal nevus were included (mean age: 71 years). Ultrasonography and ss-OCT revealed well delimited cystic-like cavity within the melanocytic lesion. Number of cavitation included: only one in two cases, two in another one and multiple in one patient. No cases presented malignancy during follow-up.

Choroidal nevi can rarely develop intralesional cavities. This characteristic has been described in uveal melanomas, but not yet in choroidal nevi. We described a series of cavitary choroidal nevi providing high quality imaging and long-term follow-up.

It should be taken into account that cystic cavitation may appear in choroidal nevus presenting a diagnostic challenge in their differentiation from uveal melanoma.
