Since 1941, the Edward Harkness Eye Institute of Columbia University has offered the Basic & Clinical Science Course in Ophthalmology, which topically covers the Basic and Clinical Science Course of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. While focusing on ophthalmology resident and fellow learning, it has also proven effective in communicating foundational knowledge and the latest scientific findings to the vision science community. The curriculum is revised annually to include the most recent scientific advances and controversial developments in the field.
The course is four weeks in duration and will be held from January 4 to 29, 2027 at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York. An international faculty of more than 80 clinicians and scientists is chosen based on expertise, clarity of presentation, and visual aids. In addition to lectures, the B&CSCO includes a dissection lab, a phacoemulsification lab, a glaucoma surgery lab, a hands-on imaging workshop, and instruction in retinoscopy and refraction.
